Sharmans Cross

Scope

Sharmans Cross is a 1920s property located in the suburbs. The building is one of three matching detached houses on a tapering site, due to their location on the inside bend of the road.

The project involves the internal remodelling and rear two-storey extension to the existing building to provide a more eye-catching and contemporary front elevation, reflective of the Art Deco Style. The design utilises large volumes of glazing to flood the space with natural light during the day, and incorporates a grand entrance hall and a small gym and seating space in the garden. Due to the tapering nature of the site, the design keeps within the original volume of the building, to ensure no open space is lost.

Challenges

The tapering site meant that the design needed to be carefully thought out to ensure the home did not dominate the garden space, or encroach on neighbouring properties.

During planning, 10 objections were made to the local planning authority, which put a halt to the works. The objections were taken to a committee where the design was approved unanimously.
